An Ethical Brand: LAUDE the Label

Another brand that makes sustainability the core of their mission is LAUDE the Label: Honoring Earth + Maker. LAUDE the Label began in 2014 with a group of 8 women and the founder Carly Burson. She wanted to create a brand that benefitted “makers in artisan communities access the global marketplace and create sustainability where there had been vulnerability and insecurity.”

What is special about this brand is that, not only are they environmentally sustainable, they also find it important to support women artisans in Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, India, and Peru.

In other cases, many fast fashion brands are underpaying their workers, making them work long hours each day, and putting them in harsh overall working conditions.

LAUDE the label on-the-other-hand knows that most fashion workers are women, and that’s why this brand does what they do. They know that women are the leaders of the future, and that is why they want to help suppress poverty in the countries that need the most help.

This brand cares about the people behind their clothes (a common theme we will be seeing in a lot of sustainable brands), and LAUDE the Label understands that artisans workers need to be paid a fair wage. Fortunately, they are able to pay their workers 2 to 3 times the minimum wage.

This fair wage helps beyond the standard pay, and it benefits these women’s families, children, housing, and food consumption. Being able to support themselves with healthcare as well as for their families, is an opportunity that should be happening more often for people in lower income communities.

The next big issue with clothing workers is the working conditions. Brands can take inspiration from LAUDE the Label because the artisans only work 6 to 8 hours a day, and some even remotely. A big factor in the working environment is making sure it is safe and that the workers are not fearful of the work they are doing.

LAUDE the Labels clothing is made to last, has an accessible price, and is environmentally conscious.

One unique factor that they say they do is cut out the middlemen by giving their consumers the products directly. Their products are said to be timeless pieces that will last a lifetime, and this is what sustainable fashion should be all about.

Some of LAUDE the Labels environmentally conscious choices include using no dyes or toxic chemicals in their products and using mostly all recyclable materials like organic cotton and linen. Their paper products and packaging are all made from recycled materials as well.

I think a lot of the time consumers appreciate a brand’s transparency of the work and actions that are put in place within the business. LAUDE the Label shows full transparency on their website, and they even post a yearly “Impact Report”, similar to the brand Reformation in the last brand spotlight, that shows the impact and important data of what the brand has accomplished in the given year.

Another thing to note is that they are a part of Certified B Corporation® and Fair Trade Federation members. This brand is carbon neutral, and a tree is planted with every purchase.

On LAUDE the Labels website, you’ll find numerous clothing collections, apparel, jewelry, and accessories; they even have a gift and home page with art prints and candles.

We love to see brands moving forward in a sustainable way, especially ones that focus on the fair treatment of their workers like LAUDE the Label. Definitely check out their website for more information and to shop their collections here!
